The Forgotten Field Novel - Chapter 97
C97
He struggled, moving his head, and tightly grabbed her wrists.
Talia resisted with tenacity and dug her nails into his soft flesh. His face, which had been red before, turned pale with fear this time.
He thrashed his body, letting out strange choking sounds. She, completely unfazed, applied force with her fingers as if she were ready to tear out his tongue.
At that moment, a sharp scream was heard from somewhere. Shortly after, the echo of hurried footsteps resonated and someone grabbed Talia by the shoulders.
Talia let out a fierce cry: “Let go of me! I’m going to rip his tongue out so he never spouts those disgusting things ever again!”
“Good heavens! Someone separate them!” a shrill voice resonated loudly.
Without caring about anything, Talia gripped Lucas’s jaw and sank her fingers even deeper.
Just as she was digging her nails into the root of his tongue, she felt a strong pressure around her waist and her body was lifted into the air. Talia, panting with rage, looked back. Varkas, who had picked her up like a sack, was looking at her with a frigid expression.
“What the hell is going on here?”
He alternated his gaze between her and Lucas, trying to understand the situation in front of his eyes. Then, Lucas, who had been sitting dazed as if he couldn’t believe what had just happened to him, jumped up.
“T-this woman tried to rip out my tongue! Look at this!”
Lucas, pointing at her with his finger and shouting desperately, stuck out his injured tongue to show it. Talia shouted, the veins in her neck bulging: “Come here! I’m going to rip it out from the root!”
The boy stepped back, terrified. “Do you see? She’s completely insane! She’s not sane! Why did you marry a woman like that when you had the First Princess? You should request an annulment of the marriage right now…!”
“Lucas Raedgo Shierkan.”
A low voice heavy with a sigh settled heavily in the hallway. Both Lucas and Talia, who was out of her mind, froze. Varkas, after catching his breath for a moment, continued speaking slowly:
“What did you say to my wife?”
“I only…” Lucas stammered with a bewildered expression.
Varkas, looking at him coldly, sentenced: “It seems they are words you cannot repeat in front of me.”
Lucas’s face turned ashen.
The boy, moving his eyes from side to side, muttered as if it were an injustice: “No, it’s just… even if that’s the case, is it normal to go to this extreme…?”
While Varkas glared at him, his frigid attention turned this time toward her. Talia shrugged her shoulders and grew tense. He questioned her like an inquisitor in a court:
“Could Your Highness explain to me what happened?”
Talia looked at him with eyes full of resentment. Recalling the insulting words his brother had spat, her entire body began to tremble. Does he really want me to repeat that with my own mouth?
She replied as if spitting the words between her teeth: “Not even if I were dead will I do it.”
Varkas’s eyes narrowed.
Varkas, letting out a long sigh as if running out of patience, added rigidly: “You must tell me the reason so that I can apply the corresponding punishment.”
Lucas’s face contorted; he had an expression of indignation, as if he were receiving unfair treatment. Talia, who was looking at him as if she wanted to tear his face apart, began to struggle.
“It’s not necessary, so let me go.” “…” “Don’t you hear me? Let me go!”
Finally, he set her down on the ground. Talia straightened her sore legs and swept her gaze over the people crowding the hallway. Drunken faces observed her with curiosity. She felt a wave of disgust.
After casting hostile glances in all directions, Talia turned around and headed to the bedroom. The few steps of distance felt like miles. She opened the door with difficulty and collapsed immediately onto the bed.
Shortly after, Varkas entered behind her.
Talia buried her face in the pillow and ignored his presence. If she didn’t, she felt she would pounce on him and interrogate him like a crazy woman, just as she did with Lucas.
Is what your brother said true? Did you really do those things with Ayla?
“Talia Roem Shierkan.”
One side of the bed sank and a dense shadow cast over her. Talia tensed her back. Somewhat rough hands wrapped around her shoulders. Right after, her body was turned by force, and in front of her tear-blurred vision appeared his face, sharp as the blade of a well-forged sword.
He asked sharply: “Tell me properly what happened.” “What more do you want me to tell you?” Talia replied fiercely.
“You already saw everything. I tried to rip out your brother’s tongue and I failed because of you. What more explanation do you need?” “Why did you do something like that?” “Because I wanted to.”
As if his patience had run out before that childish fight, Varkas’s gaze turned frigid. He grabbed her chin and muttered with an oppressive air: “How long do you plan to behave like a child?”
Talia frowned. The one who had crossed the line first was Lucas Raedgo Shierkan. Why did she have to receive this reproach? She pushed his hand away and shot back viciously:
“I only returned the insult I received. If you’re going to blame someone, blame your father for giving his son that upbringing.”
He pressed his temples like someone suffering from a migraine. “Revenge is done through a representative. Not by throwing yourself directly like a ten-year-old savage.” “And who is going to be my representative? Are you going to slit your brother’s throat for me?”
Talia let out a mocking laugh. “I don’t expect anything from you. If someone attacks me, I will take revenge on my own.”
The coldness in his pupils became even more severe. “Are you going to climb on top of another man again to fight like a dog?” “It’s not that I can’t do it.”
Talia shot him a hostile look. “If you don’t want to see that scene, keep your brother out of my sight. If that brat ever loiters in front of me one more time, this time I will truly destroy him.”
The furrow between his brows grew deeper. His fingers moved restlessly, as if he had an extremely annoying problem in front of him.
Talia suppressed the urge to scratch him all over and crawled toward a corner of the bed, covering herself with the blanket.
How much time passed? She felt Varkas get up. Shortly after, the sound of the door closing was heard and a frigid silence occupied the room. Talia peeked her head out slowly and looked at the empty room. Upon confirming she was alone, the tears she had been holding back burst like a broken dam.
Biting her lips to swallow her sobs, Talia buried her face in the pillow and let out her repressed crying. At some point, she seemed to fall asleep. Upon opening her eyes in the dimness, she heard a clinking sound and turned her head in surprise.
Varkas had returned and was organizing medicine bottles on a shelf. While she looked at him dazed, his calm gaze crossed with hers over his shoulder.
“Since you wouldn’t stop groaning, I brought painkillers. Take them and sleep.”
His calm attitude, as if he had never been furious, caused a strange feeling of oppression in her.
Talia pulled the blanket up to the bridge of her nose. “I don’t want them.”
A sigh of exhaustion escaped from between his lips. In the gesture of brushing back his bangs abruptly, a trace of impatience was noticeable. Is this man also holding back his anger?
Talia carefully observed his face bathed in the dim light. On that fair-skinned face, the only vivid thing was his lips, which were now firmly closed. While she stared at them, Lucas’s vile voice echoed in her mind:
“Could it be that my brother still can’t forget his previous fiancée?”
Talia bit her lip. The next moment, without even realizing it, unexpected words poured from her mouth:
“If you give them to me mouth-to-mouth, I’ll take them.”
Varkas, who was placing the potion bottle on the shelf, stopped dead in his tracks and turned toward her. Only when she saw his eyes slightly widened in surprise did she become aware of what she had just said.
