The Forgotten Field Novel - Chapter 96
## Chapter 96: THE FORGOTTEN FIELDS (NOVEL)
“If you need anything, please let me know.”
Varkas, who was meticulously observing the interior of the room while hanging his coat by the fireplace, made a request to the lord of the castle, who stood waiting by the door, in his usual tone of indifference.
“I would appreciate it if you could bring me water to wash up and hot wine.”
“I will prepare it right away.”
When the man withdrew, Talia collapsed onto a chair with velvet cushions. She was exhausted after having traveled through several cities and towns since early morning. Pretending to adjust the hem of her soaked skirt, she discreetly rubbed her aching knees.
Varkas, who was watching her out of the corner of his eye, spoke in a low voice.
“I will call for a healer, so it would be better for you to rest today.”
Talia furrowed her brow.
“And what will you do?”
“I intend to have an interview with the lord of the castle. It might get late, so sleep first.”
“Hasn’t it always been like that?” Talia replied with a somewhat sharp tone.
Although they had shared the same room for the past few days, she had never seen him go to bed. Varkas worked until dawn and, at times, spent the night awake with the local lords. Her initial nervousness about sharing a room with him had become almost absurd.
Talia, looking at him with tightly pressed lips, finally let herself fall onto the bed.
“I will rest on my own, you go tend to your business.”
Varkas observed her in silence, let out a slight sigh, and left the room, closing the door.
Shortly after, the castle servants entered with a tray of wine and fruit, as well as a wooden bathtub with hot water. Talia called her nursemaid to wash up lightly and ate a few pieces of fruit in syrup along with the wine.
She was about to ask the healer to burn some herbs for sleep when she heard somewhat rowdy laughter outside the door. It seemed that the knights were holding a party with drinks.
Talia, putting on an apathetic expression, suddenly tensed her shoulders. Amidst the thunderous noise, high-pitched laughter was mixed in. She urgently shook her nursemaid, who was nodding off in front of the fireplace.
“Nursemaid, does the lord of this castle have daughters?”
“How am I supposed to know that?” the nursemaid replied with a bewildered gesture.
Talia snapped nervously:
“Haven’t you heard anything while going back and forth?!”
“I don’t know well either. They called me as soon as we arrived.” The nursemaid let out a heavy sigh. “More than that, could I go back to my room now? I also need to rest a bit.”
Talia, who was about to send her downstairs, bit her lip. Seeing her tired face, she felt a pang of guilt. She must be exhausted from the unfamiliar journey and, furthermore, she had to assist her with the bath.
Talia nodded slowly.
“All right, you may leave.”
The nursemaid left immediately. Talia took the opportunity to peer into the hallway. As the outside noise grew clearer, her stomach churned with anxiety. She knew perfectly well that Varkas was not someone who would do anything improper, but even so…
Talia, biting her lips with an uneasy expression, finally put on her coat and went out.
Descending the stairs and passing through the hallway where the shadows of the fire danced, she encountered a scene of paired men and women flirting. She narrowed her eyes and scanned the men’s faces. From their familiar countenances, they seemed to be the cavalry warriors of the Siorcan family.
One of them pulled a young woman who looked like a maid by the waist and brought his lips close to her ear. The maid blushed and let out a giggle.
Talia, watching the scene with disgust, headed toward the back of the hall. Around a long table filled with food and drink, Varkas’s attendants were seated. They too were being attended to by women wearing almost transparent clothing.
Apparently, the lord of the castle, under the pretext of entertaining the guests, had brought in a large number of prostitutes. Talia crossed the hall with a hurried pace and a fierce gaze. Her only thought was to get Varkas out of that filthy place immediately.
“Your Highness!”
While she traversed the hall dragging her aching legs, she heard a familiar voice near her ear. Talia turned her head sharply and narrowed her eyes upon recognizing a knight from the east named Tyron.
The man approached, scratching the back of his neck with an awkward smile.
“I had heard that your Highness would rest early, what brings you here…?”
“I came out because there was too much noise.”
Talia, searching for Varkas with her gaze, gave him a sarcastic smile.
“Did I happen to interrupt your good time?”
“Hahaha.”
The man stammered a response with an exaggerated laugh. Talia, sending him a frigid glare, looked back at the bustling hall.
“More than that, where is Varkas?”
“His Excellency is in the study on the third floor. Sir Darken requested a private audience.”
Talia, who was examining the hall inch by inch, turned her head in surprise.
“Just the two of whom?”
It was then that the man seemed to understand why she was searching the hall in that manner, and an amused smile appeared on his lips.
“Yes, he even dismissed all the maids, so do not worry.”
In an instant, Talia’s cheeks flushed upon feeling that her intentions had been discovered. She raised her voice:
“Who said I was worried?!”
She turned around to leave abruptly, but the man followed her immediately.
“You cannot walk alone. I will escort you to your room.”
“It is not necessary.”
“It is necessary,” the man said firmly. “If something happens to the Grand Duchess, all the responsibility will fall upon us. Come, this way.”
Without giving her time to reject him, he took her by the elbow. Talia, by instinct, broke free from his grip.
“I said it is not necessary!”
Surprised by her violent reaction, the man frowned. Talia left him behind and walked as if she were fleeing along the path she came from.
As she climbed the stairs again under the dim light, her thighs and calves began to cramp. She seemed to have pushed her legs too hard throughout the day. She thought that, despite the hour, she would have to call the healer to apply recovery magic on her.
She passed through the long hallway, giving light taps to her numb thighs. Suddenly, she stopped upon hearing a strange groan. Turning her head toward the source of the sound, she saw a peculiarly shaped shadow moving at the end of the hallway.
A few seconds later, she could distinguish that it was a man and a woman pressed together as if they were a single body. She felt the food she had barely ingested rise to her throat.
Swallowing her nausea, she stepped back. At that moment, her gaze crossed with that of the young man who was passionately kissing a voluptuous-bodied maid.
Talia stifled a scream. The person who was fooling around in the hallway was none other than Varkas’s younger brother.
Talia, hesitating, turned around hastily. In doing so, she lost her balance and ended up falling to the floor. An intense pain shot through her knees, pelvis, and back due to the heavy impact. She let out a muffled cry with tears in her eyes.
“Sister-in-law!”
Seeing the scene, Lucas pushed the maid aside and ran toward her in an instant. Talia fiercely rejected the hand that attempted to help her up.
“Do not touch me!”
Lucas stepped back, startled. Talia, who glared at him with a frigid look, stood up with difficulty while groaning in pain.
As she walked with effort, leaning against the wall, Lucas, who had frozen stiff, murmured with an expression of injustice:
“Is it because of what you just saw? I wasn’t the one who proposed doing it first. She tempted me saying she would give me a good experience, so I just accepted.”
She felt her ears being contaminated by his stammering words. Talia threw him a look full of disgust.
“Who asked you? Why do you say things I haven’t asked for and dirty my ears?”
Lucas’s face turned red with rage. He tensed his jaw and looked at her with fury.
“Why do you make such a fuss over a simple kiss? If you do much worse things with my brother every night…”
Talia threw her hand out like a whip. As if he had foreseen the attack, Lucas caught her wrist immediately.
“Ha! Do you think I’m going to keep letting you treat me like this forever? If you hit me just one more time, I won’t stay cross-armed either…!”
The boy, lowering his voice to a threatening tone, suddenly shut his mouth. He seemed to have noticed that her face was burning red, as if it had been set on fire.
He blinked dazedly and murmured as if he couldn’t believe it.
“Don’t tell me… the two of you still haven’t done anything…? Uggh!”
Lucas, who received a kick to the shin, doubled over at the waist.
Talia began to rain her fists down upon his back without mercy.
Lucas, who took the blows without being able to defend himself, pushed her against the wall.
“Damn it! With that temperament of yours, it’s normal that my brother still hasn’t laid a single finger on you!”
He roared with ferocity, as if the heat had risen to the crown of his head.
Talia’s shoulders flinched as if she had been stabbed with a knife.
The boy, looking at her with burning eyes, added with cruelty:
“Could it be that my brother still can’t forget his previous fiancée? He liked what he did with that woman so much that with you he simply can’t…”
Talia did not want to hear a single word more.
She dug her nails—which she had begun to let grow again a few days ago—into the lips that wouldn’t stop chattering.
With a cry of “Ah!”, Lucas grabbed her arm.
His slender body fell backward, notably bewildered by the behavior of her, who was lunging like a crazy woman.
Talia sat upon his belly, pried open his mouth (which was nothing more than a filthy latrine), and squeezed his slippery tongue with her fingers. His face, tanned by the sun, turned so red it seemed on the verge of bursting.
