The Forgotten Field Novel - Chapter 108
## Chapter 108
Varkas touched the stain with the tips of his fingers.
The slippery liquid formed an ugly smear on the milk-white skin.
The thin fabric stained with blood clung to her warm skin like seaweed.
He stood staring at the scene with a lost gaze, and then pressed his ear against her bloodied chest.
He felt a faint pulse.
His thoughts, which had frozen, finally began to react.
He lifted her along with the sheet and ran out, pushing the bedroom door open with force.
A few maids passing through the hallway froze in fear upon seeing him. Varkas shouted with a thundering voice:
—Call the healer! Now!
He felt as if he had swallowed boiling water; his insides were burning. It was as if a scorching heat was tearing his stomach apart.
The next moment, he felt as if a piece of ice had pierced his bones, and he shuddered.
She timidly reached out her hand to pull the blanket, and an arm as hot as forged iron wrapped around her.
The relief of the heat seeping into her blood lasted only a moment, before the fire in her belly began again.
Talia writhed while sweating profusely.
She felt the arm around her back withdraw, as if its owner had realized her suffering.
She clung to him with all her strength.
“Keep holding me. Don’t leave me alone.”
She did not know if he had heard the words that had barely brushed her lips, but warmth surrounded her body once more.
The pain was intense, but somehow she felt safe.
She curled up against his broad chest like a chick hiding under the feathers of a hen.
Shortly after, the pain stabbing her belly subsided and a deathly silence settled in. She felt as if she were submerged in warm water.
How long did she remain submerged in that strange sensation of serenity? Her clouded consciousness gradually began to clear.
Talia lifted her heavy eyelids with difficulty.
The beam of light filtering through the curtain struck her retina directly.
She let out an involuntary groan from the sharp pain and heard the sound of hurried footsteps approaching.
—My lady! Have you regained consciousness?
Talia turned and saw her nanny with tearful eyes, causing her to frown. The nanny took her hand warmly while sobbing:
—Do you know how much my heart suffered? Why do these things always have to happen…
Talia looked confused. She could not understand what had happened.
She brought her hand to her forehead, which throbbed with pain, and the nanny suddenly stood up, wiping her tears:
—How foolish of me! This is no time to stand around here. Wait a moment, I will call the healer immediately.
She ran out of the room, quickening her pace.
When silence reigned once more, Talia’s mind began to function again. She looked around slowly.
After a few seconds, she remembered that they had arrived at a city in the East and the West.
But her subsequent memories were blurry, as if she had been dreaming with her eyes open.
—You have finally awakened.
While she was trying to piece together the fragments of her memories, the healer hurriedly entered the room, alarmed.
She approached the bed, breathing heavily:
—How does your body feel?
Talia looked at her dumbfounded and opened her parched lips. A harsh sound came out of her cracked throat.
Seeing this, the healer filled a glass with water and offered it to her.
Talia lifted her body with difficulty, leaned against the headboard of the bed, and took a sip of the warm water. The liquid flowing down her esophagus caused an uncomfortable sensation in her stomach.
Talia coughed slightly due to the strange sensation, and the healer immediately withdrew the glass.
—Do not drink too much at once. Your stomach is damaged, so you must be careful even when drinking water for a while.
Talia frowned:
—Damaged?
—Do you not remember?
The healer looked at her with somber eyes and sighed deeply:
—You lost consciousness shortly after arriving at this castle. Then you were sick for about two days.
Talia’s eyes widened in surprise, and then her face tensed as she suddenly remembered something.
She was struggling in bed when a sharp pain suddenly attacked her. The pain tore through her belly, so she could not even cry out for help while groaning.
Then, a hot liquid rushed up her throat and she lost consciousness at that very instant.
She pressed her chest, which was still throbbing with pain, and looked at the healer with cold eyes:
—Did someone poison me?
—No, Your Majesty. It does not appear that poison was used.
The healer quickly denied it.
—It seems that the internal bleeding is the result of the side effects of the medicine you have been taking for the past few weeks.
—Side effects?
Talia looked at the healer with eyes full of suspicion.
The woman continued with a calm explanation:
—The medicine you were taking contains ingredients that can damage the stomach. Generally, they are useful components to increase energy and vitality, but if a patient with a weak stomach takes them for a long time, they can cause internal bleeding.
Talia let out a sarcastic laugh:
—So, are you telling me that they gave me that medicine by mistake?
The healer’s face tensed slightly.
She sighed deeply:
—That is the conclusion I have reached.
—…
—I examined the medicine you took carefully, and it consisted only of ingredients that help restore energy. However, it seems that the healer who prepared it did not know that your stomach is as weak as a child’s.
Talia looked at her with distrust:
—It sounds like you are defending her.
—I am only informing you of the facts I have discovered. I do not want you to waste your energy on unnecessary suspicions.
The woman stood up calmly and replied in a serene tone, then took a small jar from the shelf.
—In any case, that healer will be punished accordingly. And from now on, I will take care of your treatment myself.
She poured an appropriate amount of a clear liquid into a small cup.
Talia looked at her warily. The healer smiled bitterly and explained:
—It is a honey tea mixed with a small amount of herbs that help heal the stomach. Take it slowly and it will make you feel better.
Talia took the cup reluctantly, but she had no intention of drinking it.
She stood contemplating the warm tea for a moment, and then suddenly opened her mouth:
—The medicine I have taken until now, are you sure it is not poisoned?
—I cannot completely rule out the possibility that other ingredients were mixed in, but if that were the case, there would be traces of toxins in your body. However, you did not present any symptoms of poisoning.
—Then…
“Is Varkas alright?”.
She was about to ask, but she closed her mouth. She had no convincing justification for why he would have taken the medicine prescribed for her.
Talia moistened her dry lips.
Varkas had also been taking small amounts of that medicine.
Had he really not been affected by any side effects?
Talia could not shake her concern, so she said in a tense tone:
—That medicine, is it completely safe for a healthy person?
The healer looked at her with surprise for an instant, and then nodded:
—Yes. Under normal conditions, it would help restore energy.
Talia’s shoulders relaxed with relief.
Then, she suddenly felt disgusted with herself and let out an empty laugh.
It was incredible that she felt more relieved because Varkas had not been poisoned, than by the fact that she herself had not been the target of an assassination attempt.
Her lips moved absently:
—Varkas…
“Where is he now?”.
“How did he react when he saw me fall?”.
She held back the questions rising up her throat, set the cup aside as if throwing it, and lay back down in bed.
