The Forgotten Field Novel - Chapter 101
Chapter 101
He felt the tension in the nerves of his entire body.
When he slowly poured a liquid with a herbal scent into that narrow and humid space, her flushed face contracted slightly with a light frown.
It seemed that the taste of the medicine was truly repulsive to her.
However, he could not understand her sensation.
He could perceive the strong herbal smell that irritated the nose and the bitter, sharp taste that stimulated the taste buds, but without feeling any kind of aversion.
Varkas inserted his tongue into her mouth, which was tightly contracted, and withdrew it over and over again, drawing her trembling body even closer.
She swallowed what had accumulated in her mouth, trembling softly, and the sound of her short breath moistened the tip of his tongue.
His eyes settled on her face, deeply altered by that so unfamiliar act.
In an instant, he felt as if something sharp scratched his spine.
He pressed his thumb against her swollen lips, forcing her jaw open.
Her eyes, moistened, trembled with anxiety.
Her voice, somewhat rushed, leaked out:
“Come on, quickly, drink the medicine.”
She looked at him with clouded eyes and then slowly stuck out her tongue.
He absorbed it into his mouth immediately, sucking it gently, which caused her slender body to tense up as if it would break from the shock.
He held her by her tense neck, pulling her head closer.
He felt, beneath the thin layer of clothing, her delicate bone structure and her soft curves.
Her body, which had lost a noticeable amount of weight in just two seasons, seemed as though it would crumble under the slightest pressure.
He felt a strange uneasiness for some reason, so he pulled away from her.
He heard a sound similar to a cry:
“Why…?”
She looked at him with feverish eyes, and from between her swollen lips came a voice like that of a lost child:
“Why do you do this kind of thing?”
He frowned, somber.
He wanted to ask her in turn:
Why am I not supposed to do this?
They were husband and wife.
Even if they did more than that, it wouldn’t be strange.
He didn’t demand it only because he knew she didn’t want it.
“But you were the one who reached out your hand first.”
He repressed the urge to blame her and looked at her clouded, bewildered eyes.
Suddenly, he felt a tightness in his chest due to her gaze, which mixed confusion, caution, and suspicion.
He slowly loosened his arms and said coldly:
“If you hate that I do this, don’t provoke me in the future.”
She looked at him with darkened eyes, biting her lips and lowering her gaze.
Her lips, deformed by the gesture, caught his attention again.
He mocked himself as he got up from the bed, but her restrained voice scratched his nerves:
“Who… who said I hate it?”
Varkas looked at her with cold eyes.
She seemed to be claiming something that belonged to her.
“I won’t cry anymore, so continue. The medicine… there’s still a little left, right?”
In an instant, a fierce heat invaded his entrails.
He frowned upon feeling something akin to aversion.
What exactly did this woman want from him?
“I hope you suffer. That you suffer a lot.”
The words she had once uttered, intoxicated by the medicine, crossed his mind.
At that moment, he ignored her words as something insignificant.
Even after decades had passed, he still hadn’t recovered his sense of pain.
He was no longer even capable of remembering what pain felt like.
Perhaps, the sensation he was experiencing right now was the closest thing to it.
“If… if you hate it, go far away.”
Talia couldn’t bear the prolonged silence and pushed him from the chest.
He grabbed her hand quickly, as if snatching it away, and drew her incredibly light body onto his lap.
His face, strangely beautiful, drew close.
He tangled her soft and fearful hair between his fingers and bit her soft lips again.
She had always been a woman who was not satisfied until she destroyed others and herself.
Since he took responsibility for her, he knew his orderly world would collapse.
Varkas closed his eyes while feeling a heat, as if his entrails were tearing apart, slowly spreading through his body.
As if he had swallowed poison.
The journey continued without any setbacks.
They visited the main lands of the northeast and then headed south, traveling through various commercial regions.
Before them unfolded landscapes of large cities, dazzling due to their enormous size.
However, none of them managed to captivate her heart.
Her mind was full of confusion.
Talia rubbed her sore lips while looking out the window.
The figure of Varkas appeared from time to time among the knights marching in formation.
He wore black armor and guided his horse with a rigid posture, being the very embodiment of the cruel Lord.
He never looked like the primitive man who savored her lips every night.
She felt a contraction in her entrails, so she drew the curtain of the carriage window.
But even after blocking the view, she couldn’t stop obsessively reliving what happened between them.
She leaned back in the seat, which shook slightly, remembering his actions.
He never kissed her on his own initiative if she didn’t ask for it.
However, he didn’t seem like someone who simply responded to her requests either.
He always did more than what she asked for.
Sometimes, she felt that he was the one who was more passionate.
But when she got scared by the depth the contact reached and pushed him away, Varkas withdrew patiently with an expressionless face.
In those moments, she felt that everything might just be an exaggeration on her part.
Talia bit her lips out of habit, felt a slight pain, and frowned.
Upon touching them with her fingers, she noticed a slight trace of blood.
She didn’t know if she had done it to herself or if he had.
Lately, he was the one biting her lips more than she was.
She wiped the blood carelessly and sank among the blankets.
At that moment, the carriage that was advancing without stopping came to a sudden halt.
“We have arrived, get down.”
Talia, who was submerged in her thoughts, poked her head cautiously out of the carriage.
She saw cronic tents and scattered huts on the vast plain.
At the sight of the simple village, she looked confused.
The south, compared to the north, which had a large economic gap, generally consisted of wealthy large cities.
“We will stay here tonight.”
A young warrior from the knights, whom Varkas had assigned as her escort, explained to her politely:
“It may be uncomfortable, but please bear it just for one day.”
Talia did not answer, but instead moved forward stumbling.
Varkas was talking to a man who seemed to be the village chief.
The man, who was discussing something with seriousness, turned toward her and indicated with a kind gesture for her to approach.
Talia approached cautiously to his side.
“We will set up our tents separately, so all you need to do is prepare a place for my wife.”
He placed a hand on her shoulder, speaking with a formal tone.
Talia looked at him with surprised eyes.
“What do you mean?”
“Tonight there will be a light punitive battle.”
