Surviving The Game As A Barbarian Novel - Chapter 711
Chapter 711: Special Force (2)
I didn’t mention that there could be a traitor among the noble houses on a whim, but because I genuinely suspected them. Human nature was unfathomable, and it wouldn’t be odd for even just one of the thousands of nobles to harbor malicious intent.
“Are we really going to the marquess’s house?”
“Yeah, because the marquess could also be the traitor.”
Those words, on the other hand, were completely empty. The marquess wasn’t a moron, and since he was practically the most powerful person in the kingdom due to working as the king’s proxy, what reason would he have to join hands with the Noarkans? The probability of his being a traitor was very low.
Hmm… But I guess it’s not completely zero?
In truth, I wasn’t completely sure.
That guy was beyond suspicious. He had a secret that he was hiding. And that was why I would use this opportunity to turn his house upside down looking for it.
“Uh… C-can I go to the restroom for a moment?”
Heh, it was obvious that he was trying to step away so he could report this.
“No,” I deadpanned.
“B-but it’s really urgent.”
“Is it more urgent than saving this nation?”
With the fate of the nation put on the scale, Mumu was at a loss for excuses.
“Just do it in your pants.”
One final piece of advice from me, and he didn’t ask to go to the restroom again. However, it was still a sign that Mumu would attempt to leave the group at some point, so I put one safeguard in place.
“Raven.”
“Yes?”
“I heard that there’s a type of magic that sends out disruptive waves to stop contact with those outside its range. Is it possible to do while on the move?”
“The spell won’t cover much area unless I have a specialized magic tool for it. Around six yards across or SO?”
“What if you don’t need to stop signals from getting in, and only stop the ones getting out?”
“Hmm, then I’ll be able to increase the area a little.”
Oh, was that so?
“Do it immediately. This is a top-secret mission.”
Raven then immediately cast the spell. With his connection to the outside world cut off, Mumu looked petrified, though he let out an awkward laugh to hide it.
“What are you doing over there? Let’s go.”
After ensuring the security of the special force, we immediately headed toward the marquess’s mansion. Raven seemed to have picked up on my intentions as well. Even though I didn’t tell her explicitly, she continued to stay close to Mumu as we moved.
“Um… Wouldn’t it be better for you to be next to Baron Yandel?”
“No?” Raven snarked, sending Mumu a look for his question. “I like being here. Why do you want me to go over there?”
He should have just given up and followed willingly, but here he was, trying to resist to the very end.
People like him usually didn’t live long. Even a lizard knew to let go of its tail. Not because it liked doing it, but because it had to survive.
When Mumu fell silent, other members began to whisper amongst each other. The details of their conversations were straightforward.
“Can we…really do this?”
“Then you go try and stop him.”
“But…isn’t there some truth to what the baron is also saying? Since the prime minister made this unit, we won’t have to worry about the consequences—”
“What the hell are you saying?! We’re on our way to dig through the prime minister’s home right now!”
“Ah, right. I guess we are.”
“Won’t we all get dragged to court if this goes wrong?”
They were all feeling antsy about the fact that we were going to turn the house of the marquess, practically the most powerful person in Rafdonia, upside down.
“Still, let’s go for now. There’s nothing much we can do.”
“That is true.”
However, since they all knew that the law was far and the barbarian was close, they only whispered their discontent amongst themselves. None of it translated into action.
“Oh… Baron Yandel, what is your business here?”
We finally arrived at the marquess’s mansion. There, we met the servant with whom I had somehow gotten pretty acquainted. He was eying me in mild confusion.
“I haven’t heard anything from the marquess, so if you are not here on any appointment—”
“I am not here today as Bjorn Yandel.”
“Pardon…?”
“Today, I have come as the captain of the special search unit appointed by the military command,” I declared, revealing the new identity I had obtained today.
The servant looked even more confused.
Fair enough. He would have no idea what sort of group the special search unit was in the first place.
“Then…” he began cautiously. “For what reason is the special search unit here?”
The servant probably couldn’t even conjure up an answer for himself. After living as the butler of the marquess, who was more powerful than any other person around, his imagination must have been quite stifled.
“We are here for a very simple reason: We’ll be searching the mansion for a bit.”
“Pardon?”
I ignored the fact that the servant was now more confused than ever and showed myself inside. The other members weren’t as quick to follow and seemed hesitant.
“What are you all doing? Move in.”
“Okay…”
Still, as soon as I looked back and told them off, they quickly followed me in.
Naturally, the soldiers of the marquess’s house looked confused at my actions and slowly blocked my way.
“Uh… B-Baron?”
“Y-you can’t do this.”
“If the marquess learns of your actions…”
However, they had all dealt with me causing a scene here in the past. Rather than actively trying to use force to drive me out, they tried to use their words to resolve the situation.
But if I could be persuaded by their words, I wouldn’t be here in the first place.
“I am Bjorn Yandel, the captain of the special search unit appointed by the military command! Get out of my way! If you stop us or try to obstruct our work, then you will be assumed to be in league with the Noarkans and dealt with accordingly!”
When I only pushed forward even harder after they used the name of the marquess against me, the soldiers and the servants all looked panicked.
Did something really happen? Was I here because I actually knew something?
Everyone was caught in indecision and confusion.
But there are a few smart ones here.
A few soldiers with exceptional decision-making skills charged me.
“This is the mansion of the prime minister of this nation, Marquess Tercerion!”
“Protecting this mansion is my duty.”
“Uwaaaah!”
Of course, as soon as they charged me, I knocked them unconscious with a flick of their foreheads.
One could wonder if there was a point in charging if they were going to be defeated this easily in the first place, but I held them in high regard. Since they couldn’t stop me, it was better for them to go out fighting than to not do anything at all. At least they would be able to keep their jobs.
Unlike these guys, who were just standing around and looking confused.
“Uh…”
“Um…”
The soldiers stepped back with each step I took toward them. As I watched their reactions, I had a thought.
After I left this place, how many people here would get fired by the marquess?
Not that I needed to care about something like that. No one in this day and age could have the same job their entire life, anyway.
“W-w-we really entered the mansion…”
The members who followed me into the building began to shake a little as well, seemingly worried about the consequences.
It was time for me to show my leadership skills.
“Do not worry. I will take responsibility for everything. You will not be hurt in any way.”
A hero who always kept his word.
A warrior among warriors who didn’t know how to even lie.
Thanks to my having such an image, the expressions on the faces of the members lightened a little.
“There is only one thing you need to do from now on: Look through the entire mansion with me and find anything that might be suspicious.”
No response.
“Alright, let’s go! This isn’t an opportunity you can waste!”
After taking a short moment to get the morale of the unit up, I officially began the search raid on the mansion.
Crash!
I destroyed the statues that could harbor Noarkans inside them…
Rip.
And ripped away a picture frame that could hide Noarkans behind them.
“Hmm, they aren’t here either.”
“Can we…really do this?”
“It’s not if we can, it’s that this is how it is done in the first place. This is what it means to search.”
The searchers of the palace went white when they learned what “searching” meant for a barbarian. However, in the end, I was the one who took the first steps here.
“Argh! Whatever!”
“Rip them all! Since this is the mansion of a noble, there should be at least one hidden passage!”
Just like baby chicks following after a mother bird, the search members who were lagging behind threw away their rational thoughts and began to search the mansion using my method.
Crack.
Shatter.
Rip.
The marquess’s mansion immediately fell into shambles.
The servant who had greeted me at first was stunned, looking like someone who had just been hit by a bolt of lightning as he took in our work. His reaction was pretty amusing.
“Argh! Don’t you know how expensive that is…?!”
At first, he flinched as if he was losing his own money.
“Nothing! There’s nothing! Behind that picture! Don’t rip it!”
“That makes it seem even more suspicious. Rip it already… Huh? There’s really nothing behind it?”
Then, he just screamed in anger.
“I’m done… I’m done for…”
He even dejectedly mumbled to himself as if his future was being destroyed right before his very eyes.
“Quickly, quickly! There’s no time to look at every detail, just move quickly!”
Now, it was a battle against time.
Since things had gotten to this point, the marquess would surely have heard what we were doing here.
First floor, second floor, third floor…
We quickly and precisely began to turn the entire mansion of Marquess Tercerion upside down.
Maybe it was because I knew that this was the precious mansion where the marquess grew up, and the mansion where his grandparent grew up.
This is…
It was beyond refreshing to make a mess of the place.
“Behel—LAAAAA!”
And so, I destroyed it even more energetically, and my arms moved faster than my eyes could track and pocketed anything that looked expensive.
Time passed quickly as we continued our search.
“We finally found it.”
In the room that looked to be the marquess’s office, when I pulled the bookcase that was put right against the wall, a hidden steel door appeared.
“Yeah, I knew that he’d have at least one hidden room.”
“What are you going to do? It looks pretty sturdy.”
“What else is there to do?”
This wasn’t my first rodeo.
[You have equipped No. 687, Siege Slaughterer.]
Boom!
After quickly swapping out my weapon, I swung it down against the steel door and swung at it again. However, the door was so thick that although it bent inward with each strike, it didn’t show any signs of breaking.
It’s going to take too long at this rate…
What should I do?
Then, one of the search members stepped forward.
“Um… Could I try it?”
Ah, now that I thought about it, we had a few knights here as well.
“Sure.”
I stepped back and made space, and the knights began to use their aura and swung their swords against the steel door. I didn’t know what metal it was, but they resisted the aura quite well as well. However, in the end, the lock mechanism was slashed away and the door opened.
“The secret room of the prime minister.”
Just what was hidden beneath these stairs?
My curiosity began to grow, and just as I was about to step down…
“Baron, I won’t be going in.”
“M-me neither.”
The brave searchers of the unit that had searched through the mansion up to this point began to step away.
The reason was very simple.
“We know how to stay alive.”
“Not witnessing things that were never meant for your eyes is a trick to living a long life.”
Tsk, well.
I guess from their perspective, this was something they’d need to risk their lives for. What I was about to do was to look at the marquess’s “secret,” after all.
“Sure, then I’ll go in by myself.”
“Pardon? By yourself?”
Raven seemed to want to follow me, but I shook my head and stopped her.
Thinking about it again, it was probably for the best if I was the only one who took a quick peek at what was going on down there before coming back.
“I’ll be back soon. Just stop anyone else from entering.”
I then headed down the steps that had been hidden behind the metal door. They didn’t go down as far as I expected, and an area that was big enough for one person soon appeared.
However, since I couldn’t figure out how to turn the lights on, I took out a candle from my bag.
Fwoosh!
After entering candle barbarian mode for the first time in a while, the stone chamber quickly lit up.
When I checked what was inside, I ended up flinching solid.
There were bookshelves on each side wall, and there was a small work table and chair.
When looking at just that, it looked like just an ordinary secret office…
“Whoa, what the fuck?”
I ended up cursing for the first time in a long while.
I wouldn’t have reacted that strongly even if there was a secret plan in here to kill me. Instead, on the bookshelves, on the table, on the walls, and even on the ceiling when I looked up to check…
“The hell is all this?”
There were pictures of a woman plastered everywhere.
It was like the room of a stalker.
