Regressor of the Fallen Family Novel - Chapter 298
Chapter 298: “Oh no?!”
Logan found himself engulfed in an overwhelming feeling of unease that was entirely new to him. He was momentarily thrown off balance by the strange gray energy that seeped into his body, attempting to dominate him. However, as he called upon his inner strength to resist, the discomfort swiftly dissipated, vanishing like snow under the spring sun.
Perplexed, Logan muttered, “Huh?”
The energy that had caused such turmoil dissipated far too easily.
Still startled, Logan instinctively scanned the battlefield, searching for the source of the attack amid the chaos. At the heart of the enemy forces, surrounded by formidable knights, stood a figure cloaked in black. Their eyes met, and Logan caught a glimpse of the twisted expression hidden beneath the robe.
The target of the assault was now evident.
Amidst the clamor, a cry pierced the air, “I’ll put an end to you!!”
A flash of silver emanated from the mounted rider. Once again thrust into the spotlight, Logan began cutting through the enemy ranks single-handedly.
“Stop him!”
“He’s all alone!”
“Take him down!”
The battlefield erupted with shouts as the silver-clad knight charged forward. The only way to overpower an Aura user like him, amidst a vast army without a counter, was through sheer numbers, and they surged towards Logan.
Ordinary Aura users would exhaust themselves after defeating a certain number of foes, but for skilled magicians, it was a different story. However…
“Begone!”
With a resounding roar, a brilliant silver beam soared into the sky, nearly 70 meters high, transforming into a colossal sword that slashed horizontally.
The earth seemed to split open as the illusion of space being torn asunder followed, decimating Logan’s immediate troops, causing chaos at the corner of the battlefield. The onlookers who had merely observed now wailed in terror, unable to even vocalize their fear.
“AAAAHH!”
“Ah, a demon!”
“It’s a monstrosity!”
‘Now!’
In that fleeting moment, Logan surged forward, teeth clenched, through the bewildered enemy soldiers.
The core of power within his heart vibrated intensely, replenishing the energy lost in less than a third of a heartbeat. It was a risky move, utilizing Force instead of Aura to cleave the earth, particularly since he was already stretching his energy thin, resulting in inefficiency and wastage.
But facing tens of thousands on his own, Logan needed to display strength to intimidate the enemy and rally his allies, a tactic that paid off handsomely.
“Stop him! Can’t you see?!”
“How can we…?”
“Such a monstrous being…”
Despite the commanders’ commands, the panicked enemies failed to halt Logan’s advance, eliciting cheers from the Liberty Army.
“The Silver Reaper!”
“Gale Slayer!”
“The Silver Reaper stands with us!”
Following the havoc, the number of magic wielders shaping the battlefield dwindled. Emboldened by Logan’s actions, the Liberty Army began to regroup.
“Weren’t you supposed to handle that monstrosity?! What is happening now?”
The coalition commander from the Kingdom of Kaleton berated the black-robed sorcerer before him. His initial elation at the collapse of the enemy lines had now turned into utter dismay.
As the robed figure turned, flashing blue eyes meeting the commander’s gaze, a chill ran down his spine at the magician Gerohin’s menacing words.
“Worthless creatures…”
Surrounded by knights trembling in fear, Gerohin’s eyes betrayed a hint of anxiety.
‘The Soul Breakers were executed flawlessly. So why?’
The situation made no sense. Soul Breakers were designed for annihilation, not manipulation like Mind Breakers, especially against superhuman adversaries.
‘And yet, he shrugged it off so effortlessly?’
Logan’s swift dismissal of a spell meticulously crafted by spellcasters made the idea of magicians being regarded as superhumans alongside Aura users seem ludicrous. With their magical prowess largely unknown in the world, defenses against such attacks were improbable. Even if they existed, Logan’s ease in overcoming them was disconcerting.
‘The legend of his foe.’
The power disparity was evident.
‘If his aura had been golden instead of silver, different measures would have been necessary.’
As Gerohin refocused and conjured magic, news arrived that the contract with the Second Prince had been extended. This left no room for failure, especially with the Tower emerging from the shadows after years of silence, choosing this moment to undertake the mission and establish a new settlement in the eastern minor kingdoms deliberately. Even as an elder of the Tower, repeated failures would not be pardoned.
– ‘The Era of the Departed Gods.’ The signs of the prophecy had been confirmed.
Recalling the words of his master and Tower head, Gerohin gritted his teeth. The sight of Logan, the prized catch from the Duchy of Tahrir, flashed in his mind once more.
“I’ll bring you down!”
Not all his skill lay in mental manipulation.
With a predatory growl, grey magic surged with intent.
‘Magic!’
Logan observed the grey magic in action, unlike previous assaults that targeted the mind alone.
Vines of grey thorns sprouted from the ground, ensnaring the charging horse completely. As Logan and his mount struggled against the vines, a towering grey barrier obscured their vision, and suddenly, a massive black serpent lunged forward with gaping jaws.
“Tsk!”
Boom!
The serpent’s head shattered the space where Logan had stood moments earlier. However, he had already propelled himself off the saddle, hurtling towards the sorcerer in mid-air.
“Hah!”
In a heartbeat, he closed the gap to the robed figure, surrounded by knights with crimson eyes and bulging veins on their faces.
“YAAAH!”
“KRAAH!”
Amidst cries and shouts, the knights unleashed their attacks. Once mere foot soldiers, they now wielded blades infused with Aura capable of shattering stone, while intermediate knights discharged condensed Aura with remarkable speed.
‘Unbelievable…’
It was evident this spell required sacrifices among comrades. Victor’s report hinting at demonic influence played back in Logan’s mind, mingled with a tinge of remorse.
‘If only I had the Boots of Wind.’
With his original gear, he could have effortlessly evaded such assaults and leaped through the air. Alas, he was now without them.
Employing Ghost’s Shadow to its utmost, Logan evaded the knights, who, though fierce, lacked precision in their frenzy.
“Ugh.”
“Keugh.”
Cutting down a handful of knights, Logan pressed on towards the sorcerer with minimal delay. Yet, even that brief pause allowed the enemy crucial time.
“Begone!”
With a resolute cry, a potent shockwave, seemingly rending space itself, struck Logan’s position.
Boom!
Rumble!
In an instant, Gerohin’s location lay in ruins as dust and debris clouded the air.
“How dare you…”
After casting several potent spells consecutively, Gerohin’s complexion paled further, a triumphant smile on his face.
But in the next breath, a chilling sense of imminent demise gripped him from behind. However…
Crack.
“Kuh…”
Before he could react, a sensation akin to lightning piercing him from head to toe jolted through his body.
Thud.
His form split in two, with Logan’s image, now radiating a ‘golden’ Aura, faintly reflected in his remaining eye.
Panting heavily, Logan, with a look of revulsion in his eyes, gazed at the sorcerer’s lifeless body.
‘That was too close.’
In that critical moment, he had tapped into his Aura, barely holding back and briefly accessing his special abilities. Without that resolve, he would have been the one lying defeated.
– No matter the circumstances, I can defend myself.
Arriving at a war not of his choosing, expecting safety and aid, Logan had not anticipated such a threat to his life.
‘Who are these individuals exactly?’
Encountering enigmatic sorcerers wielding unheard-of magic. In his previous life, such tales were unheard of. Nevertheless, now was not the time for curiosity.
“The enemy sorcerer has been vanquished!”
Having regained his composure, Logan displayed his ‘silver’ Aura prominently in the sky and proclaimed loudly.
Thus, the outcome of the battle’s second phase was sealed.
* * *
“Whoa!”
“We emerged victorious!”
“We’ve triumphed!”
Following the skirmish on the plains, cries of “Long live Liberty!” reverberated across the ranks of the Liberty Army.
In truth, Liberty had decimated the primary forces of three out of the four kingdoms in the coalition single-handedly. This victory not only positioned them as the leaders of the coalition but also as conquerors.
However, most of the accolades were directed towards the superhuman who had turned the tide of battle, the Gale Slayer.
“Long live Liberty!”
“Long live the Silver Reaper!”
“Long live the Gale Slayer!”
Listening to the soldiers’ jubilation, Kahill Zamod offered a faint smile, bowing deeply at a ninety-degree angle towards Logan.
“Gale, sir. Overcoming the three kingdoms is now just a matter of time. It’s all thanks to you.”
The initial dismissive attitude towards Logan had vanished, replaced by a sycophant willing to wear out his palms in adulation.
Yet, Logan, holding a modest ring in his hand, frowned slightly.
“Count.”
“Yes, your Excellency!”
“Do you know anything about the sorcerer I defeated?”
“Uh… I mean… Well…”
“And this peculiar insignia?”
Infusing his Force into the ring, Logan projected an image of a blue circle with a coiled black serpent.
It was only the second instance Logan had encountered this symbol, but it demanded attention.
“My apologies, your Excellency. I will investigate promptly.”
As anticipated.
Logan sighed softly, shaking his head.
‘If mages were deployed at the front lines of the minor kingdoms’ coalition, they must possess considerable power. How much influence does the Empire truly wield?’
Unaware of the enmity the bearers of the black serpent symbol harbored towards the Empire, Logan’s concerns deepened. The Liberty commanders, standing awkwardly in the aftermath, found their victory celebration muted.
Then came the news that captured everyone’s focus.
“The Kingdom of Calun and the Kingdom of Teronan have declared war…”
